What is BYO Bounskee?
BYO Bounskee is a modular, build-it-yourself game set that brings a fun, competitive twist to classic games like Skee-Ball®, Tic-Tac-Toe, and baseball (and many more), using ping pong balls. It’s a game set that encourages friendly competition and creativity for all ages, with plenty of ways to customize how you play! BYO stands for "build your own," but someday we hope to see "bring your own" Bounskee competitions where competitors bring their own artisticly customized Bounskees to blend sport with self-expression. Someday, other versions of Bounskee may exist that are not BYO, but this is the way we came up wit it and can best produce it on our own- and we think it's pretty cool!
What are the different playing tops and attachments (AKA expansions)?
The Bounskee playing tops and attachments (also known as "expansions") include:
The Classic Top: kinda like Skee-Ball®.
The Baseball Top: A twist on baseball that uses token runners on a scorecard (printable on our website).
The Casino Top: Double-sided- one side for Blackjack and the other for Poker.
The Tic Tac Top: A new and exciting way to play Tic Tac Toe.
The Lucky Shot Top: Bounskeeship (played similarly to Battleship®) and other simple Bounskee games. Includes optional obstacles to change up the playing field.
The Basketball Hoop attachment: Bounskeefied basketball or HORSE.
The Slots Attachment: Can be played like Connect 4® or as a solo challenge called Overflow.
Each expansion comes with rules, and some offer multiple ways to play. You can even make up your own rules. There are printable scorecards and contest sheets for some of the variations on our website.
If I buy a BYO Bounskee game set, do I get all the expansions?
Only if you order the Deluxe Complete Set. Otherwise, you start with one version and can add on whichever expansions you like most. Note that some sets are not compatible with every expansion.
Are all BYO Bounskee Sets compatible with all of the expansions?
No, but you can check out our compatibility chart to see what works. Here are the details in long form.
The Deluxe Classic Set easily expands to all versions. The Deluxe Slots Set requires a Bounskee Basic (component) and the Deluxe Wings/Gutter Kit (component kit) to be compatible with all other expansions. The Basic Sets are upgradeable to Deluxe with a few components. The Basic Plus Set is not compatible with the Hoops or Slots Attachments and the Baseball Top, while technically compatible, doesn't work well with the standard rules. The Basic Mini Set is compatible with the same expansions as the Basic Plus Set except for the Classic Top.
How long does it take to build a BYO Bounskee?
Each BYO Bounskee set comes with easy-to-follow instructions and all the necessary parts. No special tools are required. While some versions take longer to build than others (Slots is the most difficult), any BYO Bounskee game set can be assembled in less than 10 minutes (maybe a little longer the first time or two).
What are the age recommendations for building BYO Bounskees?
We recommend that kids under 10 years old work with adult assistance. The Slots Attachment is a little more complicated so we recommend ages 13 and up for this expansion.
What materials are BYO Bounskee made from?
BYO Bounskee is laser cut from high-quality, furniture-grade Baltic birch plywood and sanded for consistency of thickness so all the pieces will fit together as you add on different expansions and components over time. Some rubber bands are used and the Classic Top comes with “cups” made out of leather. It breaks down flat and we package it in a pizza box.
How durable is BYO Bounskee?
BYO Bounskee sets are built from sturdy materials that will hold up well as long as they are treated with basic care. Since it is modular, if a piece does break, you can order replacements. Your set can be built, broken down, and enjoyed repeatedly.
Can I customize my BYO Bounskee set?
Yes! BYO Bounskee offers custom engraved backboards as an upgrade, making them perfect for businesses, events, tournament trophies, and personalized gifts. We also very much encourage anyone to paint, or otherwise artistically transform, their sets as a mode of self-expression.
Aside from a Bounskee Set, what else do I need to play?
Bounskee is best enjoyed on a firm table or other hard surface with at least 12 inches of bounceable space in front of your set (16 or more inches is even better). All game sets come with ping pong balls. Some variations call for tokens and/or dice and the Casino Top written rules require a deck of cards (though you can potentially come up with your own rules). Scorecards for some versions are available to print from our website.
Can I play Bounskee indoors or outdoors?
Bounskee can be played outdoors on dry days with little wind, but otherwise it is best played under shelter. Environmental factors such as wind and rain can effect the ping pong balls and wetness isn't good for the longevity of a BYO Bounskee.
Who can play Bounskee?
Bounskee can be enjoyed by most anyone- school age kids (6+) to senior citizens. It requires a base level of skill, but then luck takes over. It is easy to play, but hard to play consistantly well- making for an exciting challenge. Furthermore, Bounskee has been found to be beneficial in fostering healthy social engagement and sportsmanship with children and adults with some developmental disabilities.
What are the benefits of Bounskee?
There are so many! Bounskee is a great way to connect with all kinds of people of all ages. It invokes healthy competition and is great for contests and tournaments. It can even be used to settle minor disagreements (ex. winner picks dinner). Building BYO sets and playing Bounskee are both great for practicing hand-eye coordination. It can help younger players develop social, spatial, and mathematical skills. It is a great form of light exercise that can be therapeutic for some limited mobility patients and the elderly. It's nostalgic and social qualities might even be useful in cognitive therapy for those suffering from memory loss. The option to make it an art project offers a means of self-expression. All that, and its suuuuper fun, too!
Can I host a Bounskee tournament?
Sure can! You can print the scorecards from our website. It can be a fun and engaging activity for some types of gatherings and is great for team building. However, in order to have an "official" Bounskee contest or tournament, you will need to hire an official Bounskee Shotcaller (or become certified, yourself) to keep score of all bouts. Only official Bounskee Shotcallers can record official Bounskee stats.
What is a “bout” of Bounskee?
A bout of Bounskee is a competitive match between two players or teams. We decided to go with the word "bout" because it is really fun to say: "How about a bout of Bounskee?"
